Bicycle City USA

After months of planning, our goal to bring public bike sharing to Minneapolis just got a big boost: $1.75 million in federal funding. This giant infusion of money gets us much closer to the $3.3 million we need to be up and running by next year. The Minneapolis Bike Share Program will be the nation’s largest, with 1,000 bikes planned for Downtown, Uptown and the U of M campus. This comes at a time when biking is as popular as ever in Minneapolis – year round. Bicycle commuting has nearly doubled here, the largest increase of any major city, putting us second in the nation just barely behind Portland. As the only major city in the nation to receive federal funds to get more people out of their cars and onto their bikes, bike ridership will hopefully grow even more in Minneapolis. Plus, with more than 100 miles of bike paths in the city, there are more places to get where you need to go on your bike. Look out Portland, here we come!
