Help to find a new job

The Star Tribune wrote last week about the challenges that small business owners face when their enterprise fails. Although very touching and informative, the report did not tell the whole story. It’s important to know that if your self-employment ends, you don’t have to go it alone; help is available. The City of Minneapolis’ Dislocated Worker Program helps people who have lost their job, including people who were self-employed. Services are free and address individual needs and goals. You can get in-person or over-the-phone help to find a job, enhance your skills or start a new career.

The first step is to get in touch with one of our Work Force Centers where you can get labor market and career information, research job leads and attend workshops on job search strategies. Many similar services are also on-line at www.mnwfc.org. I visited the Work Force Center in south Minneapolis last week and was astounded by the hope and optimism people had about their ability to get back to work or get started on a new career, with the help of the Work Force Center. Minneapolis is a national model for the unique and stellar way that we help people find work. People of various backgrounds and educational and professional experience shared stories with me of their of success at getting back to work, due to the help of the City’s Work Force Center.

Many people are facing financial difficulties that they have never faced before. They may not be aware of the resources available to help address the challenges of suddenly losing income. Remember that if you need help to find a job or recover from a lost job, you can always call 3-1-1 (in Minneapolis) to get connected to help. There is help, there is hope, and now is the time to reach out and ask.
